There's
a whole lot a history in these parts.
In
1682 Robert Cavalier, Sieur de la Salle, erected a cross
at the mouth of the Mississippi River and claimed the
territory for Louis XIV of France, naming the region
Louisiana. In
1803 the United States paid France $15 million for the
Louisiana Territory (President Thomas Jefferson
negotiated the Louisiana purchase with Napoleon
himself). At that time Louisiana stretched from the
Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from the
Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border, 828,000 square
miles.
