Amiens 24th March 2000

(merci Alice for spelling check)

Being an ardent God botherer, I often like to include pictures of churches in the diary and boy, have I got a beauty for you today. It's only the huge gothic Notre-Dame of Amiens. Begun in the year of grace 1220 under the diocese of Evrard the blessed, in the reign of Louis VIII, son of Philip the wise, this 112m  cathedral  dominates it's surroundings and is thought to be the best example of gothic architecture anywhere. With an internal volume of 200000m3 and it's elaborate three-tire construction, they sure don't make 'em like this anymore...
Huge flying buttresses and reinforcements for the walls were required in the 15 century, to prevent this thing falling over Gargoyles, put there to scare the locals
Main entrance and frontispiece containing over 3000 exquisitely carved figures The floor plan showing the nave with it's 110 choir stalls and 4000 woodcarved figures depicting scenes from the Bible.
